Acrylic Bathtub Cleaning Mistakes: Correct Care Methods to Avoid Scratches & Yellowing

Oct 22, 2025 Leave a message

Acrylic bathtubs are popular for their lightweight design and smooth surface, but improper cleaning can quickly lead to scratches, dullness, and yellowing. Knowing what to avoid-and what to do instead-is key to keeping them looking new.

First, steer clear of abrasive tools and cleaners. Many homeowners use scouring pads, steel wool, or powdered cleaners to tackle tough stains. These scratch the acrylic's surface, creating tiny grooves that trap dirt and speed up yellowing. Similarly, harsh chemicals like bleach, ammonia, or acetone-based products break down the acrylic's protective layer, causing discoloration over time.

The correct cleaning routine is simple. For daily dirt or soap scum, use a soft, non-abrasive sponge and a pH-neutral cleaner (such as mild dish soap mixed with warm water). Gently wipe the surface-avoid scrubbing hard. For stubborn stains (like hard water spots), make a paste with baking soda and water. Apply it lightly, let it sit for 5 minutes, then wipe away with a damp sponge. This lifts stains without damaging the acrylic.

Post-use care also matters. After each bath, rinse the tub with warm water to remove leftover soap, shampoo, or body wash residue-these are major causes of yellowing. Dry the surface with a soft towel to prevent water spots from setting. Avoid placing heavy or sharp objects (like metal bath caddies) directly on the tub; use a rubber mat or padded tray to protect the surface.

Finally, skip extremely hot water (over 60°C/140°F). High heat softens acrylic, making it more prone to scratches from even soft sponges. Stick to warm water for bathing and cleaning.

With these simple steps, you can avoid common mistakes. Proper care keeps your acrylic bathtub scratch-free, bright, and free from yellowing for 5+ years-no costly replacements needed.
